MEDx will welcome Dr. Richard Stack as Distinguished Lecturer

On October 2, MEDx will hold its Distinguished Lecture featuring Richard S. Stack, M.D., F.A.C.C. at 4 P.M. in the Trent Semans Center Great Hall.

Dr. Richard S. Stack is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine in Cardiology at Duke University; President and Managing Partner of Synecor, LLC, a specialized asset creation and management organization that serves as a med-tech business generator and incubator of new medical technology companies based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; and a Managing Partner of Synergy Life Science Partners, LP, a life science venture fund based in Silicon Valley, California. Since leaving clinical practice to form Synecor in 2000, Richard has personally founded 10 medical technology, R&D and financial organizations, including Synecor and Synergy. In addition to inventing the original technologies for each of the Synecor incubated companies, Dr. Stack has invented or co-invented over 50 major medical products sold worldwide during his career and has over 150 issued and pending patents in his name.

One of these companies, Synchrony Labs, a wholly owned subsidiary of Synecor is recognized as the premier FDA GLP Experimental Testing Facility in the US. This Laboratory was formed in 1982 and spun out along with Synecor, from Duke University in 2000. Since that time it has expanded considerably and serves as the testing facility of choice for some of the largest international medical device manufacturers.

In 1981, Dr. Stack founded the Duke University Interventional Cardiology program, which along with being one of the first in the US, has grown to be the one of the largest and best-known programs in the world. He currently holds the permanent position of Professor Emeritus of Medicine in Cardiology. An Endowed Professor Chair was also established in his name. Dr. Stack is licensed to practice medicine in both North Carolina and California. Dr. Stack has long been recognized as an international thought leader in the medical field. He has authored over 360 manuscripts, textbooks, book chapters and scientific abstracts. He has been a principal and co-principal investigator of three NIH grants and received numerous research awards during his career including the International Award for Best Interventional Cardiology Experimental Research (1995, Netherlands).

Dr. Stack has been married to his wife, Nancy, for 48 years, has 3 children and two grandsons. His hobbies include martial arts (9th degree black belt and two 6th degree black belts among 3 different martial arts), aviation (piloting his own multiengine prop and jet aircraft), and mountaineering.
